In the past couple of years, a tidal wave of content has been created as marketers, SEO professionals, and business owners begin to recognize the power of valuable, consistent content. To stand out in this sea of content, savvy business owners are beginning to harness the power of long-tail keywords to target searchers more specifically and rank higher in search results.

Long-Tail Keyword Phrases and Search Engine Rankings

What are long-tail keywords? They are longer, more specific keyword phases that can benefit a business when primary or head keywords have enormous
competition. For example, a primary keyword, like “web design,” is highly competitive and used by web design firms all over Boston and surrounding areas.
Less used phrases, such as “small business web design,” have a lower search volume but are searched for specifically by a typically motivated audience who
is clearly interested in specific information on website design firms for small businesses. Ultimately, this can translate into more qualified leads.

If a Boston web developer specializes in website design for small businesses, including a long-tail keyword like this will help them get increased
visibility to prospective customers. For this reason, including long-tail keywords throughout your website gives you valuable opportunities to get noticed
by web searchers who are searching for a product or service more specifically.

So how can you find these valuable long-tail keywords? While there are many methods, one great tool we like to utilize is Google Trends. Google Trends is
helpful because it reveals user intent, which allows you to cater your content to make it more valuable for website visitors. It also reveals not only
popular search terms but how their popularity has grown (or shrunk) over the course of time. So here is how to do it.

First, go to Google Trends and in the “explore topics” box enter the primary keyword you are interested in using (ex. Business web design) and click
“Enter.” You will see a graph showing interest over time, regional interest level, and related searches.

In the related searches section, you can see the top related search phrases, and by clicking the “rising” tab, you can also find out which keyword phrases
are rising in popularity. These are keywords you may want to consider adding to your website or blog posts.

To get even more specific, go back to the top and enter another keyword related to your business. For example, we entered “small business” in addition to
our first keyword, which was “web design.”

Now when we check the related searches for both of those keywords, we find that “small business website” is a term that is rising in popularity. That will
be one to add to our target keyword list.

You can repeat the process to find a variety of long-tail keyword phrases to utilize in your business website content.

This is just one of many methods for finding keywords. The benefit of Google Trends is that you learn about up-and-coming keywords in your industry before
they show up in other keyword research tools. Click here for more keyword research tips.
