You’ve heard the phrase “work smarter, not harder.” Here are some basic tips for optimizing your blog posts for better search engine optimization so you can get the most out of your blog when you don’t have the time to post several times a week:

  1. Perform your keyword research. Before you publish your blog post, perform some basic keyword research to help you optimize your visual and written content. Vary your keywords throughout your blog post, including them in your title, headlines, sub-headlines, images, written content, and hyperlinks.
  2. Write for web skimmers. Website visitors generally don’t linger on pages to find the information they need. In fact, studies show that the average user will spend about five seconds (or less) on a given page before determining whether or not the page or website is useful. That said, structure your blog posts with short, digestible paragraphs, using sub-headlines that include target keywords. Break up information with bullets when possible and bold important text. Big, bulky paragraphs should be avoided.
  3. Add internal and external links. Use your blog as an opportunity to link to relevant product/service pages or other blog posts you have written. While it’s great to use your own images, if they don’t look somewhat professional, you are doing yourself a disservice. The selections on these sites are amazing, and you may find the perfect image to complement your blog. Consider including screenshots, infographics , charts/graphs , or other visuals when you can.     Here are some image optimization tips:

  • Name your image well. If you are writing a post about root beer floats, when you save the image you intend to include, use a keyword-rich name. For example, “best-root-beer-float.jpg” instead of “image1.jpg.”

  • Include Alternate Image tag information.
    Depending on the content management system you are using for your website, you may or may not have the option of adding “Alt Text” when you upload your image. If not, insert the image into your blog post, then go to the HTML view. You will see code with your image that looks like this:

    Simply add your alternate image text between the two quotation marks in the highlighted area, so it looks like this:
